{HSCRC12} Hymn #10, When we all Get to Heaven

Hymn Challenge #10: When we all Get to Heaven
Words Written by: Eliza E. Hewitt
b. June 28, 1851; d. April 24, 1920

Music Written by: Emily D. Wilson
b. May 24, 1865; d. June 23, 1942

Eliza E. Hewitt was born, lived, and died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a teacher; however, very early on she had to leave teaching due to a spinal problem.  She lived most of her life as an invalid, and so she turned to hymn writing. Her cousin, Edgar Stites, was also a hymn writer.

While Ms. Hewitt wrote the words to this hymn, it was Emily D. Wilson that set the words to music. Mrs. Wilson was the wife of a Methodist pastor and District Superintendent of the Methodist Philadephia Conference, John G. Wilson. I could not find much information on either of these talented ladies but I hope you enjoy these bit of notes anyway.

This is a hymn I had never sung nor heard until we visited a church in our new town. My mother told me she used to sing it as a teen. Who would have known? Anyway, I loved this hymn and felt it would be the perfect hymn to get us started again with this challenge. This hymn reminds me a lot of "Christ Arose" which we studied back in hymn lesson 8.  The chorus of this hymn says:

"When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We'll sing and shout the victory."

It has been a rough, rough few days around here with issues involving property lines. My husband and I are trying to do the right thing as God would want us to but the heartache it is causing me is beyond words. We want to show the love of Christ but others are upset. I am saddened and just want to love those I come in contact with. When I read and sing the chorus of this hymn, I just think of that amazing day when there won't be any heartache or disputes but utter and amazing rejoicing!! Can you imagine "when we all see Jesus, we'll sing and shout the victory"! Oh I can't wait for that day!

What issues are going on in your life right now? What are you and/or your family struggling with? Do you feel like you are at the end of your rope? Well, not only can we be excited about that time when we finally meet Jesus in heaven where there is no more heartache, we can also rejoice right now! Jesus died so that we might have access to the Father not just by going to heaven someday but that we have access to Him here and now. He is there waiting to hear from you. He is waiting to carry your burdens. He desires that daily relationship with you and wants to hold and guide you. Are you letting Him or are you trying to take it all unto yourself? If you are a control freak like me, that can be hard to put "self" aside and ride behind Jesus. But our days should begin and end with God. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.

Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Revelation 21:6 "He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life."

Revelation 22:13 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

We need to present ourselves as a living sacrifice to Him daily. We can rejoice with Him everyday as we watch what He can do if we would just allow Him.

Romans 12:1 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."

Philippians 4:4-7 "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Look how God used Ms. Hewitt's health problem for His great purpose. As an invalid, she was able to write beautiful hymns including "When we all Get to Heaven." How might He be using your situation for His glory?

Below you will find the sheet music to "When we all Get to Heaven," and click here to get the pdf file to print this hymn. Also, be sure to check out the link I have below for you today.

Here you can listen to a country version of this hymn by Brad Paisley.

For my 6x6 page today, I used the Philippians verse mentioned above. While this hymn is about when we get to heaven and can rejoice with Jesus, I also want to remember that I can rejoice with Him daily. The clock is a reminder of how I use my time each day with or without Him and the time when I will get to meet Him face-to-face.

Also, you may have noticed that my pages used to be 5x7 and today I have chosen to do a 6x6 page. Well, as I have been unpacking I find that my favorite pages from the past have been those in my 6x6 albums or those on my ATC holder. So, for the rest of the challenge, I will be doing 6x6 pages.

Now my question to you, will you make it a point to follow Jesus and rejoice in Him this week? Remember to use Keyword HSCRC12 when posting your creations in any online galleries. Also, please leave a link to your creation here using Inlinkz! To see all of the information regarding this challenge and the previous studies, please see this post here. Blessings to each of you!

  3. Praise God, you're back! Not as much "day of rejoicing" as when Jesus returns to take us home to heaven, but swell nevertheless.
May you soon be able to say, with Psalm 16:6a "The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places." I suspect you already know you have a goodly heritage. Blessings---Jennifer in Ohio

  4. Patter,
I am older than you by far but I was raised on this amazing song. My precious gramma sang it so much I feel I have always known it. If you make it your go to chorus it will get you through anything. Will pray our Lord walks you through this problem and out of it quickly. Be patient.

  5. I was raised singing this song & after reading this post on our way home from church, I told my hubby that I'm a little sad that we don't sing as many hymns at church. Thanks for the link, I know we'll be listening to it over & over again this week.

We are trying to sell our house because of a job loss. It has been a little stressful around our house. But we know God's got this! He is Jehovah-jireh!!

  8. Like many of the others, I was raised on this song and others like it under my dad's ministry. Patter, God is faithful - he will guide you in your life's decisions. Keep the faith!

  9. Thanks everyone! And Susan, I have changed my e-mail on Feedblitz a while back. I just checked and it's my new address on their site but for some reason it sends it out with my old e-mail address. Weird! I can't figure out where else to change it on the site. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I may have to send a note to the help desk.

And just an FYI, my e-mail link is in the sidebar of my blog too. :)

  10. Hi Patter! What a NICE challenge! I used to sing that song in church when I was younger! This new church we're going to now, sings new songs AND the Old Hymns! YEAAAH! The Old Hymns are so RICH!

We understand what you're going through with your neighbor! We've had the same problem here! Sometimes, people who have lived in one place a long time or all their lives think they have more rights than you do! Go back to your Deed! You can find it at the Courthouse! AND they also might be able to help you find a way to deal with this hassle! Property lines are also BOUNDARIES! Boundaries are there to protect us! So, we can see why you'd be so upset over this! Sometimes, you have to put the fear of God in people to let them know you mean business! God doesn't expect us to let people walk all over us! We need to stand up & speak the TRUTH! Even if it's about our Property lines! (We've been through ALOT so we are at the age where we AREN'T going to take the abuse of others ANYMORE!) And that's basically what it is! People like to abuse others! If they know you're a Christian, they think you're a Push-Over sometimes! We'll be praying for you!

Did I tell you I got your little package this week? I used it this morning in church! THANK YOU PATTER! :)

  13. Patter, I pray that you have settled in well in your new home and I hope the negative things happening right now quickly resolve.
It is great to have you back hosting this challenge which I do very much enjoy and what a wonderful old hymn to start back with.
Thank you for the devotional thoughts you have shared and your lovely piece of art.
I will very soon be sharing what I have made as I wanted to get it all done today as tomorrow I will be installing a new computer and it will take some time to install all the different software I use and hope that the internet will work without any hitches.

    God Bless You

  14. Patter, so glad to see this challenge back and looking forward to getting my page done. You are so right in that as women we want to take it upon ourselves to do things, but yes, we do have to leave it in the hands of the most high God because we know who holds tomorrow. Will be praying for this situation and that God would use it to His glory!

  15. Dear Patter..thank you so much for the blessing this is today!! I have been in the same church all 44 years of my life {my daddy has been the pastor there for the last 30 years}and we have sung these beautiful hymns so often- still do!! I encourage you to keep your heart pure before your loving Savior as you walk through this dispute..I am currently struggling with an angry friend whose son had asked to marry our 20 year old and has now chosen to walk away from her...it has been such a struggle to keep my heart clean and pure before Him, but His grace, forgiveness and love are immeasurable...He will defend His children!! 16. So very sorry you have having a dispute w/ neighbors. I truly understand the stress it causes and for the last 10 years we have been at odd w/ our neighbor. They are not Christians and live a very "Party-ish" lifestyle. We do not speak/look to/at each other. It is very stressful when we cross paths at the store or at school or doing lawn work. Sharing the love of Christ has been difficult and I pray about it daily. Praying that you are able to resolve your situation w/o any hard feelings.
    Blessings,
    Valerie
