{Faith Journaling} Challenge #10

I don't know about you, but I love praising God through hymns. So, what do you prefer:

**Do you prefer traditional hymns or the newer contemporary songs? Why?

Psalm 40:3 says "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God." Enjoy sharing your faith journaling story today! See you next week with another question. Blessings,

I would have to say a mix - because the old hymns have a depth in what they tell me about what we have in Jesus and what He did for us, as well as the new worhipsongs with their beautiful melody and the way of putting things with words are touching my heart so much!

I although I do enjoy the new songs that come out. The old hymns have a deep and personal message of who God is. My fav is Great is Thy Faithfulness.

Although there are some modern hymns that resonate me I seem to prefer the imagery of the older hymns. Singing the words to Tell Out My Soul and The Day Thou Gavest etc appeal to me.

it all depends on what mood i'm in. but for the most part i'm all contemporary! they bring me into a praise and worship mode so fast...and take me to amazing depths. :)

I prefer hymns for the theology in them. Too often the modern stuff is only one or two repetitive lines over and over. Not much meat to them.

I truly love the classic hymns that have been redone by contemporary artists. Think Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) by Chris Tomlin or It Is Well With My Soul by Jars of Clay. And I agree with StampDancer-- The theology in classic hymns are priceless.

I love the hymns. Taking the time to learn the history behind the hymn makes the song much appreciated (example: It Is Well With My Soul). The theology is spot on.

Oh! The hymns of the faith.....
My Mom played piano and sang, and my Dad sang tenor and loved to harmonize with her while she sang and played. I learned MANY hymns growing up because of them. Our pastor in Indiana would sing "How Great Thou Art" boldly and with such conviction. My kids were all greatly influenced by him. I sing almost all of the time, most often those old hymns. The one I most recently memorized all 3 verses of is "Beneath the Cross of Jesus". It is a wonderful profession of faith.
I very much like the new praise and worship songs of today too. When Bush 43 was president he had a gospel music program at the White House. (Does anyone else remember?) Michael W Smith played piano and sang "Above All". I have tears threatening now as I remember his performance.
Praise God for music, talent to play and sing it, and especially for leaders who unashamedly promote the music of the faith.

i don't like the contemporary stuff at all. i love the old hymns! i used to stop and visit my great uncle after church when he got to where he could not attend. he always asked what hymns we sang and we would sing a few lines together of each one. neither of us could carry a tune, but we were hoping God saw us as "making a joyful noise!" he loved anything by fanny crosby. my favorite is "love lifted me."
