{HSCRC12} Hymn #6, Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us

Hymn Challenge #6: Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us

Words Attributed to: Dorothy A. Thrupp
b. June 20, 1779; d. Dec. 14, 1847

Music: William B. Bradbury
b. 1816; d. 1868

Dorothy Ann Thrupp was born in London, June 20, 1779, to Joseph Thrupp and Mary Burgan. From what I can tell, she was 1 of 15 children to Joseph and Mary. I was not able to find that she ever married or had children of her own. If you look at the sheet music below, you will notice it says "Words attributed to Dorothy Ann Thrupp; Music by William B. Bradbury, 1859." The reason it states that is because no one knows who really wrote the words to this hymn. Miss Thrupp would not sign her hymns but she would note her initials--"D.A.T." This hymn was found amongst her other collections but was not signed in any way.

The first verse of this hymn says:

Verse 1
Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Thy folds prepare.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

So, what do you think of when you think of a shepherd? Do you know much about shepherds and sheep? I know I don't but I do know that Jesus is my Shepherd. Jesus in not only the Shepherd who leads us but He is also the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.  Jesus isn't just doing His job. He loves us and laid His life down for us.

John 1:29 "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!'"

Let's look at a few definitions regarding shepherding:

Sheepfoldan enclosure for sheep; Church of God where believers gather to glorify God.

Undershepherda person who protects, guides, or watches over someone or a group of people; God appointed shepherds to feed His sheep; clergy.

SheepGod's people.

Now let's look at sheep (God's people/believers):

**Sheep trust and depend on the shepherd for their daily needs. Who are you depending on for your daily needs self or Jesus the believers' Shepherd? Who are you teaching your children/grandchildren to depend on?

**Sheep are meek and quiet and don't stir up trouble. Are you stirring up trouble around you or do you lovingly handle situations as God would want them handled?

**Sheep are sacrificial animals. God calls believers to lay down their lives for others. Are you denying yourself and following Him, or are you 'allowing yourself' and 'following self'?  Luke 9:23 "Then He said to them all: 'If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.'"

**Sheep should be employed by the Shepherd. How are you serving in the Kingdom for the Shepherd?

As the hymns says, He leads us, He tenderly cares for us, He seeks us when we go astray, He loves us, He bought us, and we are His! Sometimes He has to break us and carry us to change us but we can always trust that He tenderly cares for His sheep. Praise God for His glorious gift! Do you belong to the sheepfold? If not, He would love for you to enter the gate and come to Him!

Isaiah 40:11 "He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young."

Below you will find the sheet music to "Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us." Make sure you look at the link I have included for you below the hymn.

For my 5x7 page today, I used the Our Daily Bread Designs set called "Lord is my Shepherd." Not only is the image perfect in this set but there are SO many great verses for today's study. Be sure to click here to look at the entire set! I used the sheep/lamb image to create sort of a toile background on my blue paper. It's hard to see the blue since there wasn't any good light but the finished page shows it a bit better. I loved using this stamp to make toile paper!

The verses I used were from the same setJohn 1:29 which was listed above and Psalm 100:3.

Thank you very much for this timely reminder---our Beth Moore study this week dealt with Jesus as shepherd & warrior, and our music in church began centered on Psalm 23. This song is precious to me because it's the prayer hymn of Mississippi College, where my parents and sister went. (Played at my folks' wedding in '55, and at ours (gorgeous violin with organ) in '02.) Your comments were inspiring to me. No matter what, we have Jesus as our Shepherd. Baaa!!!
