Mixed Media Journal—So Much Fun!

I am taking a study on the book of Ephesians at our church this summer. I knew I wanted to make a journal for my study notes, so yesterday I had fun trying something new. I wanted to make a mixed media journal with lots of lumpy embellishments, and so that's what I did. Here is how it turned out:

Papers: 7 Gypsies Paris tissue paper
Blue Fern Studios chipboard: Spiritually Speaking, Vintage Locks, Royal Bird Frame
Lindy's Stamp Gang Mists: Pretty in Pink Pink, Luscious Lime, Salt Water Taffy, Kissin' Kenickie Coral, Wake me Up Before you Go Gold
Embellishments: Prima jean buttons and resin birdhouse; Tim Holtz timepieces; May Arts twine; misc. lace; misc. burlap; The Robin's Nest dew drops

Now, this is a very different style for me but I really enjoyed making it, and I know I will enjoy using it!

To make my journal, I first tore out all of the empty pages from my old BSF notebooks. I make a notebook each year but I never use all of the paper in each one. So, I recycled these papers to use for the inside of my new handmade journal. I really have a lot of papers in her but it's hard to tell from this photo. I will get to use the journal for quite a while!

Next, I found some chipboard pieces for the front and back covers. I covered them with tissue paper, and then I punched my holes in the covers and papers using my WRMK Cinch. Then I got started on the fun partthe cover! I began by layering burlap, lace, metal pieces, Blue Fern Studios chipboard pieces (see the supply list above for all pieces used), etc. Here is how it looked after adhering my pieces with gel medium:

Then I covered most of the cover in gesso. I did not want to cover all of the tissue paper so I did not put gesso on the corners.

Next, I began misting. I used Lindy's Stamp Gang mists and just had fun. To complete the journal, I added one more piece of Blue Fern Studios chipboard the "Believe" title from the Spiritual Blessings chipboard set. I misted it separately in the brighter pink so that it would stand out a bit.

I hope you have enjoyed today's inspiration. Now that I have tried this once, I can see myself doing it again. Thanks for stopping by. Blessings,

This is gorgeous, Patter. I love the layering and the texture and the beautiful, soft colors.

Patter this is so beautiful! I love how the misting doesn't completely cover the gesso and gives it a well blended look. I think the colors are perfect for what you are using the journal for too! :)

Hi, Patter. I just wanted to thank you for this inspirational post. It was just what I needed to inspire me to do something with a journal that I have had for at least two years. I have wanted to do something with it but just didn't know where to start. I love your beautiful journal. If you would like to see mine it is here:http://teresazuehls.blogspot.com/2013/06/mixed-media-journal.html
Just to forewarn you mine is not near as beautiful as yours but I sure had fun playing with it.
