Organizational {Friday} We Have a Winner!

First, thank you all so much for your amazing comments on the Stampin' Things units. I know Sue and I were both blessed by reading what you had to say! Now onto our winner:

Barbara B said...
Wow, what a give-away! I would love to have the Elite Ink Pad Organizer. It would be great to have my inkpads at my fingertips instead of tubs.

When I went to look at the link you provided I was amazed at the selection -- so many choices.

But I was most impressed with the 'God is Good!' verbiage at the botton of the page. I love it when a business owner is willing to show their Christian faith. May God bless StampinThings.com with great success.

NOVEMBER 29, 2010 4:43 PM

Barbara, first congratulations. You are going to have so much fun with your unit!!! Second, please e-mail me your address and the name of the unit you want so Sue can get it shipped to you. I know you mentioned the Elite but wanted to make sure you didn't change your mind between now and when your originally posted. :)

And again, thanks to the rest of you for joining in. And remember, Sue is also giving away a unit on her site. You have only through today, December 10th, to enter! Details are in the blue box on the main page here.

Well, enjoy your Friday everyone. Blessings!

Organizational {Friday} Stampin' Things "The RAK"

Sorry for posting this a little late today. One of my daughter's had surgery on Tuesday, and I am a bit behind in getting things done. Hmmm, but then again, when am I not behind? LOL! Anyway, I am SO excited to share this new storage unit with you today! Many of you know that I have three products that are my absolute favorite in my room--my Scrap 'n Cube desk pieces, my antique pieces my parents found for me, and my Stampin' Things pieces. These products are all amazing and purchases I have NEVER regretted!

Well, I am super excited to show you Sue's newest piece from Stampin' Things. This unit is called "The RAK." The RAK stamping organizer was specifically designed for those crafters who use Ranger products such as the 3" x 3" distress inks and reinkers, Adirondack ink pads, and more. Most of you know I have had a growing passion for distress inks. If you missed my post on how to keep your sponges with your ink pads, look here. Because of that growing passion, this new storage unit is perfect for all of my Ranger goodies. And yes, that's a new antique piece on top of the unit. I love when my parents go "antiquing." :)
So, how do I store my inks in this amazing new unit? First, I put my inks in color order. Usually I store all papers, inks, Stickles, paints, etc., in this order: white, ecru, taupe, brown, yellow, gold, orange, pink, red, green, blue, purple, gray, and black. When I stick with that system, it's easier to find all things "color related." So, sticking with that system, that is how I placed my Tim Holtz Distress Inks in the RAK. Then the re-inkers I put in the slot right next to the ink. That way I know which reinkers I have and which I do not. I do not have a lot of reinkers yet but there is a home for them when I do get more. :) It is definitely going to be much easier to find the reinkers when it's right next to the labeled ink pad.

Then for my Mini Misters, if I make a spray ink out of the reinkers, I put that in the center section next to the stamp pad also. Then it's super easy to pull a pre-mixed spray ink! Right now I don't have many of those either but I will put two Mini Misters in one slot. The left Mister will go with the inks on the left, and the Mister on the right will go with its matching ink on the right. Make sense? The center section holds two Mini Misters beautifully together. So, here you can see reinkers with the matching ink pad and the matching Mini Mister full of spray ink. Perfect!
This unit will hold:
48 3" X 3" Ranger Distress Ink Pads
48 Distress reinkers
48 Mini Misters
PLUS 24 more spaces for pads such as Adirondack, Staz On, Versamark, etc.

The Adirondack inks and other stamp pads fit beautifully down the side of the unit! You can see a side full of Adirondack inks here:
And if that wasn't enough, this unit also holds the Adirondack Paint Dabbers! Here you can see my paints on the back side of the unit:
They fit in the space "top first" so you see the bottom of the bottle with the color. Very nice and easy to find what you want!

There are 4 sides to this unit so it will hold a lot of inks. And of course this unit swivels so smoothly just like the other Stampin' Things units, and it is stackable. I can literally stack this on top of my Elite unit or my Topper unit or stack them 3 high! Because I am only 5 feet "tall," stacking 3 high is a bit much for me though. LOL!

Well, I hope you like this new unit. If you are looking for something for your inks, reinkers, Stickles (yes, it fits Stickles too), Mini Misters, etc., the new Stampin' Things RAK unit is perfect for it all. Hmm, maybe you want to put this on your Christmas wish list. You won't be disappointed. Remember, I have 4 units now from Sue, and ALL are my favorite!!! Have a blessed Friday!

Organizational {Friday} Hand-Dyed Seam Binding & a Ribbon Update

Most of you probably remember my Tuesday's {Tip} post about dying seam binding. If you missed that post, please see it here. If you remember it, well, I must tell you that I have not used the "soaking in a glass of water" method since that post. It takes WAY too long, the color is not rich enough, and the seam binding doesn't crinkle as well. I only mist my seam binding now! I mist with a variety of things--Glimmer Mist, my own ink mix, Maya Road Mist, and Smooch Spritz.

Sometimes I really enjoy just quickly making 1 yards' worth of seam binding to match a particular project such as this card I shared last Saturday:
It took the full yard on this card so I didn't have any left to store. The seam binding on this card was made using a mixture of Maya Road Mist Latte and Smooch Spritz Cherry Ice. I really liked that color combo and may make it again! And yes, we will talk about keeping track of favorite color combos in a minute. :) When I first spritzed on the Smooch Spritz Cherry Ice, I thought it would be awful because it was almost pink and not red at all. But once I added the latte color--WOW! It was exactly what I wanted. Don't ever be afraid to just start spritzing other colors if you don't like what you have! You never know what fun color blend you will end up with!

When I make just one yard for a particular project, I don't have to worry about storage. But when I make a batch, I need to store it somewhere. The great thing about hand-dyed seam binding is that it looks better the more crinkled it is. So, guess what? We can store this "messy." We don't have to worry about neatness! Love that! You could stuff it in a drawer or a box and be done! Inexpensive and easy! Here is what my current stash of seam binding looks like in a drawer of my antique spice unit:
Now, what I don't like about this storage for me personally is that I don't know what color combo I used, and I have to rummage through the drawer a bit. Really no big deal but just something for you to think about when you decide how you might want to store your seam binding.

Storage Boxes
Most of you know that I keep all of my ribbon in the Cropper Hopper embellishment boxes. I have done this for years and years, and I still love it to this day. It's one of the organizational ideas I haven't "upgraded" or changed. :) Anyway, Cropper Hopper used to make 3 different sizes of the boxes but now they have discontinued 2 of the 3 leaving only the smallest box size. These boxes are great but will only allow you to keep ribbon up to 1/2 inch wide. While I don't need anymore boxes, I know some of you may have been on a hunt so I want to show you what I have found, and it's also the same boxes I will keep my hand-dyed seam binding in! They are these clear boxes from The Box Depot. The box closest to the Cropper Hopper box size is PLB103. It cost $28 for 100 of these boxes! I think that's an awesome price! I have not ordered from the yet but they sent me these samples. I wanted to see the sizing in person before I purchased them. The sizing for these boxes are:

PLB103: 1.5"x1.5"x1.5"
PLB104: 2"x2"x2"

Here is what they look like with the seam binding stuff inside:
I love it because it keeps the seam binding crinkled. I also can store them in the same drawer with my other ribbons. Here you can see it in my drawer with the pink ribbons:Now, as I said, these boxes will also work for your regular ribbons. Here you can see that same box with a roll of 7/8" wide satin ribbon. This could certainly hold a wider ribbon also (up to 1 1/2").
The tag in the box is just a slip of paper where I write the name of the ribbon manufacturer. That way when I need more ribbon or I need it for a supply list, it's easy to find! I will use this same "slip of paper" technique for keeping my seam binding color combos handy. I will just write down the color combo, and stuff it inside the storage box with the seam binding.

Keeping Track of Favorite Color Combos

Well, I bet you can guess how I keep track of my favorite hand-dyed color combos. Yes, my famous color swatch book! Now even though I keep the slip of paper with the color combo in the storage box, remember sometimes I only make enough for one project. In that case, I certainly wouldn't remember my favorite color combination. So, what I do is snip off a small sample of the seam binding, attach it to my color swatch sheet, and write down the color combination. Easy, and then a cinch to recreate if I want more. I hope you have found today's post helpful. Enjoy, and happy organizing!

Organizational {Friday} Stamp Dies with Alignment Guides!

Have you seen the new, amazing dies Kelley is offering at Our Daily Bread Designs? If not, you need to scurry right on over (look here)! Right now there are 6 die sets available but I bet this will only be the beginning! :) These dies go with the stamp sets, and they cut out your stamped image perfectly! No more getting cramped hands from cutting things out yourself! Yeah! Well, of course with anything new comes a challenge--how should these dies and alignment guides be stored and organized? I think I have come up with a solution that works for me, and I wanted to share it with you today!

For those of you that have seen and/or use the Univenture binders for your stamp storage, you are just going to use the same binders! The dies and alignment guides are stored right in with the stamps! How easy is that? You can see my Univenture stamp storage along with my Rolodex inventory here. Let's look at how I store the dies and guides in the binders.

First you need to grab some Scotch Removable Double Coated Tape. This is the same tape I use to hold the die down when I run it through my Big Shot. For instructions on how to use these dies, look at the video tutorial here. Now that you have your tape, you will also want some Glue Dots or Removeable Glue Dots. I am currently using the regular Glue Dots because I am out of the Removeable ones. :) Since I am keeping my dies and alignment guides in with the stamp set, I pulled that particular binder from my shelf. I then attach a piece of the Scotch Tape directly to the back, inside cover of my Univenture binder. The removeable tape holds the alignment guides perfectly! Just press down your alignment guide on top of the tape, and it will stay there until you need to use it. They also lift up easily and stick back down wonderfully after you have used them!

Now the tape is not strong enough for the dies. The dies are too heavy. So, that is where the Glue Dots come in. I just use ONE dot per die. The Glue Dots are strong enough to hold the die yet since I just use one "dot," the die also comes off easily when I need to use it. And because the Univenture binders are plastic, it's easy to remove the Glue Dot if you need to for any reason! Here is how my dies and alignment guides look at the back of my binder:The guides are kind of hard to see since they are clear. They are just below the dies. :) I do not recommend attaching the dies to the back of the pages in your Univenture binders. I think over time, the dies would cut into the stamps on the next page. I am certain you wouldn't want that to happen. If the dies are stored on the back, inside cover of your binder, they will not touch any stamps. Now, granted, you won't have a lot of room for many dies or alignment guides in each binder; however, you could arrange your pages so that there are only one or two die sets in a binder. You can certainly use this same system by storing the dies in CD or DVD cases! Again those cases are plastic, and would hold the dies and guides perfectly using this same method!

Once I have dies for a matching stamp set I have, I also update my Rolodex inventory noting that I have the dies to go along with the stamp set. The stamp/die inventory card looks like this:
See how I just added "+ dies" to my card? Now I know I have the dies to that stamp set and the binder where I can find both the stamps and dies. Super easy! Well, I hope you enjoyed today's storage solution! Have a blessed Friday, and let me know if you have questions!

Organizational {Friday} Distress Inks & Sponges Revisited

Have you found that organizing your supplies helps you use them more often? I certainly have but I also find that my organization is constantly changing and molding depending on how I use them. This past week, I have been watching Jennifer McGuire's Holiday Thinking of Inking classes. Then Hobby Lobby has all of their stamp pads on sale this week. So, what did I do--I went and bought a few more Tim Holtz Distress Ink pads for 40% off!!! Then, what did that cause, a need to add them into my current collection and change things up a bit! :)

In the process of changing things as I put away my new ink pads, I realized that with the distress inks I prefer using the blending foam that goes with the Ink Blending Tool instead of my other sponges. So, I changed up my sponge storage a bit to make it easier to access and keep the sponges with the inks. Instead of keeping them in my plastic box (shown below), I now keep each blending foam piece attached to the stamp pad itself. Here is where I used to keep my tool and blending foam pieces:
Now instead I attached a small piece of Velcro (the hook side) to the back of each stamp pad. Then the foam piece attaches right to the Velcro. Here you can see three ink pads with the foam attached, and three ink pads with the Velcro where the foam will attach.
Then I still label my ink pads the same and still store them in my favorite Stampin' Things units--the Elite unit and the Topper!I still LOVE the other sponges for my other ink pads, and I like how I have them organized. So, they will stay organized "as is." If you missed that organizational post, please look here.
I hope this has been helpful. Don't be afraid to change something as your needs change. I know I seem to do it quite often. LOL! Have a blessed Friday, and thanks for stopping by!

Organizational {Friday} Colored Pencils

This week I finally wanted to share what I have done with my colored pencils. If you remember this post from 2008, you see how I store my pencil sharpener and how I used to keep my pencils. Yes, I still hang my pencil sharpener like that off of my bucket but I use a different bucket since my collection has grown. If you have a smaller collection, my original bucket would work great for you! Over time, I have found that I have been having a terrible time finding what I want to use so I created an inventory/swatch sheet to help. Let's look at what I did.

The Swatches & File
To get all of the colored pencil names, I copied a list from Dick Blick and pasted it into Microsoft Excel. I then created two worksheets--one for my Derwent watercolor pencils and one for my Prisma colored pencils. Here is the file for you to download:

I hope this works. You can see the two separate worksheet names at the bottom of the image. Just click on the worksheet, and you should be able to download it. Google docs seemed to mess up my formatting a bit but you should be able to fix it as you desire. :) Also, please remember this is for your personal use. Please do not distribute this file. You can certainly link others to this post but please don't distribute the file itself. I truly appreciate it!

**Well, it seems Google Docs won't allow it to download. This is so frustrating Blogger doesn't have that feature like Typepad. So, if you can't grab this file, please e-mail me, and I will send it to you. I may post it on Splitcoaststampers later too so you can grab it from there. I will update when I do. Sorry!

After creating my file, I then sat down and colored in my swatches. It was super easy and fast to do! And since I have created this, guess what? I am able to find the colors I want to use SO much faster and easier. Now who would have thought? LOL! Here are what my color sheets look like (Derwent is the first photo; Primacolor is the second photo): Now it is also so much easier to see what colors I don't have if I want to buy any individually. And if you notice in the first picture (the Derwent watercolor pencils), the right hand side of the swatch looks a bit different (see below). That's because I actually used my waterbrush to wet the swatch since sometimes the color looks different once it is wet. You can see in the first swatch how the yellow gets lighter as water is added to it. This way I have both wet and dry samples on my swatch sheet. :)
These swatch sheets are half sheets since I store all of my color swatches in one small binder. However, I have been unable to find the smaller page protectors lately, and I use them a LOT. I found a source online, and I was very pleased with their prices and service. I ordered them from Keep Filing. They not only had the 5 1/2"x8 1/2" page protectors I was looking for but they also have 12"x12" and many other sizes. The quality is very nice! I was definitely very pleased.

My Colored Pencil Bucket
Okay, most of you know that baby pink is my absolute favorite color. So, when I needed to invest in a new bucket, baby pink was my criteria! LOL! Upon searching, I found that A Muse had the exact bucket I wanted and needed!!! They come in many colors but of course I chose baby pink! You can see their assortment of buckets starting here. Just scroll down a bit. :)
Now the way I organize this bucket is by brand and then by color hue. Since I do not have a lot of the Derwent watercolor pencils, they are all together in one part of the bucket (on the left). The Prismacolor pencils are separated into the other two parts of the bucket with the yellows, oranges, greens, etc., being on the right, and the blues, purples, browns, etc., being in the middle.

This is working really well for me. I just wish I would have made swatch sheets sooner. I should know by now that I need swatches for everything. LOL! I hope this has been helpful! Enjoy, and get those colored pencils out and color! :) Blessings,

Organizational {Friday} Rotate Your Stamps!

Okay, I am preempting my colored pencil post with this one. :) I posted on my Memory Box blog about how I am now rotating my Memory Box stamps. I know most of you don't subscribe to that blog, and so I thought you might enjoy the organizational info too. So, here is what I am doing.

As I get new Memory Box stamps when a new collection comes out (such as the new, amazing Tinsel collection), I have of course storage issues that go right along with it. It's certainly a good thing but I finally figured out how to rotate my Memory Box stamps, see them, and use the new ones. I am loving this idea, and I thought I would share it with you!

When I shared my Glimmer Mist organizational post, Tracy mentioned how she used acrylic nail polish stands to organized her Glimmer Mist and other paints. You can see her post here. It looks super pretty with all of the colors on the stand but of course, I already have storage for my Glimmer Mist. I certainly loved the idea of using the acrylic stand for something else though! So, I found a great price, bought an acrylic stand, it arrived, and I immediately knew it would be perfect for my Memory Box stamps. I am going to use this unit to rotate current holiday stamps. Right now I will keep out all of the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas stamps. Then as I start working with Valentine's, Easter, and Spring stamps, I will put those on this unit, and I will put the Fall/Winter holiday stamps up in my stamp boxes, printers trays, and stamp drawers. This way the stamps I am using the most will be easily accessible! Here is what the stand looks like with the current holiday stamps on display:
And here is how it looks from the back as I see it from my office desk:
I think it even looks pretty from the back! Look at all of that awesome Memory Box rubber! :)

Where to Buy
Now, where do you get this great unit? First, let me tell you, I priced them all over the web. They are pricey--like $50-$60 per unit without shipping! Crazy!!!!!! Well, I found an eBay sell that has it for $29 but the shipping is a bit high. Once the unit arrived, I understood why it was high. Because the unit is large and it is acrylic (which can break easily), she had to use a large box and LOTS of padding so it didn’t get broken. It was wrapped beautifully and arrived perfect. So, it was definitely worth it and cheaper than the other prices I found. You can get this acrylic stand here.

Also, for those of you that may be wondering where to buy the wooden cabinet that is underneath the acrylic stand--well, it is "one of a kind." It was an antique my parents found for me earlier this year. Each drawer is slightly different than the other and numbered on the back of each drawer in old pen. It is an amazing piece that I LOVE but not sure where to tell you to find one other than to go "antiquing." :)

I really love this, and it will be great to have all of my current Memory Box holiday stamps out and easy to use! They even decorate my space a bit for the season! A double bonus!!!! Enjoy, and remember, you can see all of my past organizational tips here! Have a blessed Friday!

Organizational {Friday} Cardstock & Swatches

I think most of you know that I like swatches of all of my colors--papers, inks, Stickles, Copics, etc. Well, I have a large swatchbook of all of the Memory Box papers but it's not in my regular "color binder." That has been driving me crazy!!!! Also, I recently met with a store owner about carrying Memory Box products, and she wanted a swatch sheet. So, I decided to make one for her and a smaller one for my little color binder.

It was super easy to make. I created my file in Microsoft Excel (where I make all of my color sheets), and then I punched 3/4" squares of all of the Memory Box cardstock. I made a full 8 1/2" x 11" sheet for the store owner and half sheets for my color binder. Here is how they turned out: These sheets could be used for any papers--Bazzill, Paper Tray Ink, Cut Cardstock, anything! It truly makes it easy for buying colors, matching, keeping products lists, etc. If you are interested in this file, you can grab it from my Memory Box blog here. I still haven't figured out how to attach files to Blogger but Typepad makes it easy. I just ask that you not share the file, that it be for your personal use, and that you link others too my link instead of giving them the file. I truly appreciate it!

Also, if you are in the Salado, TX, area in October or November, I will be teaching some Memory Box classes at Stamp Salado! Click on "Newsletters" and then "Don't Miss the Fun Classes Coming Up" for more information! I would love to see you in class!

I hope my latest "swatch" file is helpful! Next time, I will be sharing what I have done with my colored pencils. Agh, at last, I can find what I want to use! :) Have a blessed Friday!!!

Organizational {Friday} Glimmer Mist

Okay, so today I thought we would talk about Glimmer Mist after I purchased two colors I already had! Ugh! You would think that would have been impossible because I have less than 10 bottles of Glimmer Mist. Gracious! Anyway, I am determined to not let that happen again so I knew it was time to organize the few colors I have on hand. Let's look at what I did.

Downloadable Chart
Most of you know that I keep a notebook of colors for my stamp ink, Stickles, Shimmerz, Luminarte H20s, etc. Here is a collage of some of my pages:
Well, I still don't know why I had not added my Glimmer Mist colors to this book yet but. . . I guess I thought I had so few colors that I didn't need to do anything with them yet. Wrong! After purchasing colors I already had, I decided to create a file to organize my colors. As I started to put together my file, I ran across a nice file on the Tattered Angels site already created for me! How cool is that? You can find the file here.

I printed the file on cardstock. Then I gently shook each bottle of Glimmer Mist as I was ready to create a "swatch." Then I unscrewed the lid, and used the tube in the bottle to "dot on" a swatch of the mist on the paper. Be careful when "shaking" your Glimmer Mist. You don't want to literally shake it up and down but you want to swirl it instead; otherwise, it can get clogged. Also, don't print on regular printer paper. The paper will be too thin for your swatches. You will want to print on white cardstock. Here you can see a close-up of one of my swatches. It is also easy to tell what you have and don't have. I guess I need that now. LOL!
Also, I have a couple of older colors that I do not think are available anymore. I just wrote the color name at the top of my paper and "dotted" on a swatch.

Storage
Right now because I only have a few bottles, I keep them in my Sticker Stadium. Yes, for those of you that remember this old storage unit, I still use it. They are no longer available but it fits so beautifully on my desk underneath my cubes that I love this thing! My Glimmer Mist is right behind my Making Memories paints.
Once my bottles were in the Sticker Stadium, I noticed that it was hard to see the colors and find the bottle I was looking for. So, I went back, punched 1/2" cardstock circles, and put a "dot swatch" on each lid. I used a Glue Dot to adhere the cardstock to each lid. Now I can easily see the colors down in the Sticker Stadium.
So, if you are going to store your bottles down in a drawer or any other bin, you may want to add a dot to your lids also. It really helps.

If I get many more bottles of Glimmer Mist, I won't be able to keep them in the Sticker Stadium because I am pretty much out of room. In that case, I will probably move them to the top of my Stampin' Things unit and keep them there in color order. Here is what they would look like. Wouldn't it be fun to have the top of this full of Glimmer Mist? :) It will hold 42 bottles of Glimmer Mist (yes, I measured)!! Do they make that many colors? :)
I am sure people have other great Glimmer Mist storage ideas but this is what works for me without buying something new. What do you have laying around that might work for your bottles of Glimmer Mist? Also, you can make your own Glimmer Mist. There are many threads on the web on how to make it. Hmmm, maybe I should put that together for you for a "Tuesday's {Tip}" sometime. :)

A RAK!
Okay, so as you read, I bought two bottles of Glimmer Mist that I already had on hand. I thought I would share the doubles with one lucky blog reader. All you have to do is leave a comment here by tomorrow night (Saturday), 9/18, at 11:59 p.m. Central. Leave a comment about Glimmer Mist--how you use it, store it, favorite color, anything. I will draw a winner on Sunday, 9/19! Here are the two colors I am giving away, and I may throw in another surprise or two. :) I hope you have found this helpful. I will see you with another organizing tip soon. I think I have organized just about everything but will think of something for you. LOL! Have a blessed weekend!
